The Gluten-Free Story
Corbett Fish House and Hawthorne Fish House are proud to offer a gluten-free menu. We can do this because we bread our fish in brown rice flour, which has no gluten.
Perhaps the most common genetic disorder in the United states is the inability to digest gluten, which is a protein found in wheat, barley and rye. Called celiac disease, its symptoms range from mild stomach upset to weight loss, malnutrition, and even permanent damage to the intestines.Tests to diagnose the disease have only recently been developed. Many people have gone years not feeling right but having no idea gluten was to blame. Once diagnosed, the person has to embark on a major lifestyle change, because gluten is everywhere.
Many if not most packaged products in the grocery store contain gluten; not just breads, pastas, cereals and desserts, but dressings, sauces, thickeners, ketchup, even spices. This means that the gluten-intolerant person does a lot of label reading and research, looking for foods that won't make him/her sick. Most restaurants are off limits. Parents of gluten-intolerant kids face huge challenges.
However, at Corbett Fish House and Hawthorne Fish House, these folks can eat with confidence. Everything on our menu is gluten-free *. This includes sauces, dressings and desserts. What this means is folks who had given up hope of ever having fish & chips again, or of eating at restaurants at all, can now get the Greatest Fish Fry of them all!
*We do offer regular sandwich buns, croutons and French rolls for our gluten-tolerant customers.
